Exposing a Chip on Board (COB)



The video shows the process of removing the epoxy resin using a scalpel and a heat gun (fired up to 200°C). Removing it with a scalpel was rather destructing, but I did not want to use aggressive chemicals. The whole process took about 10 Minutes. The last minute of the video also shows some close-ups done with a cheap webcam, which was modified for magnification. The charming emulator/nostalgia-fest triggered uncontrolled demand, including near-instant supply issues and 200-percent-plus markups in secondary markets. So in December of 2016, we decided to build our own version as an alternative. Since Nintendo bizarrely announced that it won’t be making any more of the hard-to-find mini consoles this week, we’re re-running this piece to help those of you with a DIY streak again build your own.
