NES Classic is no more, but happily cost-effective hobbyist boards are ideal for little projects.

Last Nov., Nintendo amazed everyone by going back to its roots and releasing the NES Classic. The pleasing emulator/nostalgia-fest stimulated sudden requirement, including near-instant supply issues and 200-percent-plus markups in secondary markets. So in December of 2016, we made a decision to build our own version as a substitute. Since Nintendo bizarrely announced that it won’t be making any more of the hard-to-find mini consoles recently, we’re re-running this piece to help those people with a DIY streak once more build your own. Hardware recommendations have been updated to reflect current availability and pricing for April 2017.

Don’t want to pay the ridiculous prices in the secondary market?
Why not make your own retro gaming console on the Raspberry Pi mini computer! This is done with the Retropie distribution and loading NES and/or SNES game roms onto the pi computer. I used the Raspberry Pi 3 because it is newest, includes wi-fi and bluetooth. You could make on cheaper if you wanted to.

Auto shutdown: I removed the MausBerry onboard power switch, and female USB power output to save space. I directly soldered/wired to the Mini’s power switch to the MausBerry, and the MausBerry’s 5v power output to the Pi’s Power pads on the bottom. GPIO from the MausBerry is also directly solder to the bottom of the Pi’s GPIO pins. http://mausberry-circuits.myshopify.com/collections/frontpage/products/shutdown-switch-with-rocker

‘Reset, Load, Slot -/+, Save’ buttons, are all wired to resistors and programmed to trigger keyboard presses. Just something I had lying a around from when I had a Nexus 7 tablet in my car for steering wheel controls to work. I wanted a GPIO solution but again, I had this lying around and time was a factor to be the first with a completed Mini conversion. Pixel theme is tweaked for CRT’s by enlarging the game name text. I’m not sure how to upload this without pissing off the creator of the theme.

Game Pi – A Raspberry Pi Zero Handheld [English]



The Game Pi is inspired by various other Retrogaming projects from around the net. Mine uses this nice golden-ish box I found.
It contains a Raspberry Pi Zero with a 16 GB SD Card (Class 10),
a 2.2” TFT from Adafruit (a PiTFT),
a Seeedstudio LiPo Rider,
a 2000 mah battery,
some soft buttons,
an audio buffer circuit that was self built and
some other parts.
It is using the Retropie operating system version 4.0.
The screen is not as bad as the video shows and actually quite sharp, as well as smooth in terms of frames per second.

1. A USB hub small enough to fit inside an NES cartridge. In this case, I do recommend the “AmazonBasics” 4-port mini USB hub, as it’s size and layout make it suitable for this project. If you search “USB hub” in Amazon, it should be one of the first five results that show up.

2. A 6-inch micro USB male to micro USB female extension. Be sure the male connector is not angled (i.e. 90-degree bend).

3. A 6-inch mini HDMI male to HDMI female adapter.

4. A 6-inch micro USB male to USB female adapter. Again, be sure the male connector is not angled in any way.

Try to balance cost with shipping time, unless you don’t care about waiting. Many of the cheapest adapters I found ship from China, and unless you’re willing to pay a premium for shipping you’ll be waiting for a month or longer to get your product(s).
